Afghanistan Scholarship Application Form

This program is intended to build interpreting capacity and to enable self-sufficiency for individual interpreters and support for the community of immigrants from Afghanistan. Applicants who complete this program will have been provided with a strong understanding of the U.S. healthcare system and how it functions, the legal foundation for the provision of interpreting services, strategies to ensure effective communication during interpreted encounters in addition to the necessary interpreting skills, knowledge of terminology, and important related topics.

Program graduates are expected to be able to compare and contrast U.S. and originating country healthcare systems, effectively guide interpreted conversations to ensure mutual understanding, clarify misunderstandings, advocate for effective healthcare services if necessary, and generally support effective communication between patients and clinicians.

Class participants will engage in live virtual classroom discussions with fellow students from across the United States, who speak a multitude of languages, enabling them to meet colleagues with similar interests and career goals. This professional network is envisioned to be a useful factor to enable these interpreters to more effectively understand their new home country and better support the community they serve.

Successful applicants will receive a full scholarship to complete the training program including a formal bilingual assessment, tuition fees, course materials, and, if the final exam is completed successfully, a certificate of completion. Scholarship participants will have no out-of-pocket costs for the training program but will need access to a reliable computer with a high-speed internet connection.

Applications will be accepted until June 1, 2022, or until program funds are exhausted, whichever comes first.
